NEW RAILWAY YARDS
TESTS UNSATISFACTORY According to a railwayman, the tests carried out at the Middleton yards, Christebureh, by the Railway Department, with a view to ascertaining the speed at which trucks come over the '• hump " have proved: unsatisfactory. About a fortnight, ago a. truck equipped with, a speedometer was sent up to Christebureh from Dunedin. For two weeks or so it was on a siding at Addingfon, until last week, when an official lest was held in the presence of officials from the head office in Wellington. The truck was run up and down tho yard, attaining an estimated speed' of 35 miles per hour, but according to the speedometer on the truck the speed was only five miles an hour. It was then noticed that, even when the. truck was stationary, the speedometer dial registered four miles an hour. The truck was p«t over the " hump.'- and the record of four miles per hour was preserved by the dial, though the actum speed was much greater. It is freely rumored around the yard that Middleton may be closed for fairly extensive alterations.
