NAVY DEFEATS POVERTY BAY TJio soteceri season in Poverty Buy was opened on Saturday when a team from H.M.S. Veronica met the local representatives in a fairly even and interesting game. Forward play was responsible fojr the naval men's victory, Giles being- the outstanding player on the field.
The teams were: Navy (white): Ashton, Kendal, Fakeley, Handiey, Hancock, Welling, Morris, Giles, Hughes, Mascall, and Taylor. Poverty Bay (red): Eastern,' McLean, Clark, It. Waugh, Couper, McEwen, Sincock, Watt, Graham, Hair and AL Waugh. Poverty Bay kicked off and followed up, hut Fafceley saved, and Handiey, gaining possession, passed to Giles, who sent the leather to Welling, but the hitter's shot at goal went high. Kendal sent the hall to the forwards, but the teds Kendal! again jsetJ the whites moving, hut Giles' long shot went wide. Play continued in the white's area, and A. Waugh headed into the goalmouth, but the naval goalie saved. Hancock shortly afterwords played a beautiful shot to the Bay's goal, hut Easton again saved. From play in mid-field the reds gained possession of the hall, but Kendal saved from, a forward rush and sent to Hancock, who opened "up a movement which ended;in front of the Bay's goal. Pretty play. was witnessed in front of the stand when Giles sent the hall to, Hancock, whose shot went wide. Eventually, from playing front of Poverty Bay's goal, Giles netted with a. beautiful shot.—Navy 1. Poverty Bay 0.
Clark opened up the play after the kick-off, and the game continued in the. whites' territory, hut Welling relieved and sent to Hancock, whose shot was intercepted by Couper. The latter passed to .Graham, but his shot at the navy goal went wide. From mid-field, Giles obtained possession of the leather, •passing to Morris, who sent it to Mascall, .whose :doso shot was well saved by the reds' goalie. Half-time came with the scores one to nil in favor of the visitors.
Play recommenced with the whites Dressing, njifj Hancock sent to Giles, hut his shot was stopped by McEwcn. He sent to Waugh, whose shot was saved hv the navy's goalie. From a white attack Giles sent to Taylor. Avho netted the navy's second goal.—Navy 2, Poverty Bay 0. Plav continued in mid-field, where Waugh' gained .possession of the hall and sent it to Clark, hut the whites' defence was too strong. , Tho navy backs, 'reversed tho attack, with the leather going, out in the reds' territory. Hari..rorlc , headed to .Giles, who oassed to Welling, but was penalised for off-side rjlay. Weilintr opened (in the attack, butjthe .rods defended well, and shortly afterwards spoilt a beautiful opportunity bv over-running the ball, Watt fseiit tho leather to.
