Mesdames A. Owen and B. Fisken, Miss U. Fisken, and Messrs. M. Owen and D. Miller returned on Saturday evening after a fortnight's tour of Rotoma, Waitomo Caves, Wairakei. Taupo, and Napier. Mr. I). Mill, who left Wellington on Saturday in his Moth aeroplane, accompanied by a passenger, was compelled to make a, forced landing at Kawhin owing to weather conditions. Mr. Mill made a good lauding on the beach without, mishap. He continued his flight to Auckland yesterday morning, and reached his own flying ground in time for lunch after a very bumpy journey owiiitr to the prevalence of air pockets.B.A.
Setting out on a tour of England and Europe, and possibly America, Mr. and Mrs. Lionel G. Clare left Gisborne yesterday to join the s.s. Port Albany, which sails from New Plymouth on Friday for England, via Australia and the Suez Canal. Among (he objectives'of the tourists are tho Olympic Games at Amsterdam, the English Derby, and other outstanding sporting functions. They may join the crowd of sportsmen who" are "expected to make the trip to the United .States for the world heavyweight boxing championship in duly, if Tom Heeney is matched against Gene Ttinney.
Compelled for considerations of health to fake a few months' respite from business, Mr. Fred. Maher, a popular member of the Borough Council staff, resigned recently, and on Saturday he was made the recipient, of a presentation from his fellow-employees of the council'. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, presided over* the gathering, which was attended by representative officers from all departments of the municipal service. Reference to Mr. Maher's Jong and faithful service to the town were made by the Mayor and Messrs. A. Young (borough engineer), I'. D, B. Robinson (town clerk), W. Smith, T. Kay, W. Stewart, O. Barton, T. Witty, E. Sharpies and B. A. Gray,' all of whom, on behalf of their respective departments, intimated their regret at Mr. Maher's departure. The warmest hope (hat their guest's lielath would improve as a result- of his holiday was expressed by several of the speakers, and Mr. Maher was asked to accept a travelling rug and snit-case in token of his standing among his late colleagues. Mr. Mnher made a suitable response to the remarks of the various speakers.
