OBITUARY

MAJOR W. J. HAEDHAM, V.O. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The deatli has occurred of Major W. J. ITardham, Y.C., aged 51 years, after a long illness, lie obtained his decoration in the Boer War for rescuing Trooper McCrae under heavy fire. | The late Major ITardham was bom in Wellington in 187(5, and was educated at Mt. Cook school. He was a prominent Rugby footballer, being captain of the Petone Club, and playing for Wellington ropresontaives on no less than 52 occasions. He was also a good cricketer, playing for the Petone Club. During the South African war he served with the New Zealand contingent as a farriersergeant. In addition to the Victoria Cross lie was awarded the Queen's medal and five clasps. On the outbreak of the Great War joined the Main Body, and saw service in Egypt, Gallipoli, and Palestine.] ■
