NOISE ABATEMENT

A NEW SOCIETY SYDNEY, April 4. A Noise Abatement Society has been started here. It aims at stopping motor cars from rattling, clocks from striking, church bells from ringing, newsboys from announcing the latest horrible murder, vendors from shouting thoir .wares, cocks from crowing, raucus-voieed, would-be politicians from monopolising soap boxes on the street corners, engines from running, and tho institution of some sort of languago which, can be whispered on tho fingers like the deaf and dumb alphabet.

It must be an awful world for such people, and.the wonder is that they do not seek out some island where noise never penetrates and the modern inventions have never Doen heard of. What the Noise Abatement Society hopes to attain in a community where nearly half the population lives by making a noise of some sort to attract attention to themselves or their business, it is difficult to say. The noise that Billy Hughes made the other day eoncofning dagoes and darkies has got him elected again for North Sydney. It will bo a nice little first experiment for the Noise Abatement, Society to try and put the muzzle on him. Thi* city needs a big noise to straighten out things, and as an antidote to the Noiseless Society a Big Noise League might be formed to get things done.
