MEMBER OF AUCKLAND’S COMMISSION ARRIVES “As this is my lirst visit to New Zealand and I know practically no one here, I have come across with an entirely open mind on questions and problems, which will bo brought under our notice,” said Mr. Alfred Edward, of Sydney, one of the three members of the transport commission shortly to inquire into Auck land’s transport. The visitor, who reached Auckland this week, intends to spend his time till the inquiry opens in making himself conversant with the geography of the metropolitan district. From his earliest years Mr. Edward has been connected with various forms of transport, and in Juno, 1884, lie rode the lirst bicycle between Sydney and Melbourne, lie was registrar and chief inspector under the Metropolitan Transit Commission when it was chiefly con corned in issuing licenses to cabs and vans. Then came tho trams, and in 1900 Mr. Edward drafted a bill known as the Metropolitan Traffic Ac{. of Sydney. Following this he became superintendent of police for traffic, and continued in that position till 1921, when be retired. Mr. Edward then visited Great Britain, Europe, and America, studying traffic problems, and again in 1925 proceeded overseas on a similar mission. Both of these visits were productive of reports on which the New South Wales Government lias acted. Prior to leaving by the Aorangi, Mr. Edward v’as engaged on a commission which has been sitting in connection with traffic conditions in Sydney. The chairman was Mr. J. C. Watson, a former Prime Minister of the Commonwealth, w’hilo Mr. Edward and Mr. It. B. Orchard, an ex-Federal Minister, were also members, Mr Edward is a member of the Royal Automobile Club, and also a member of the National Roads and Motor Association. He was an enthusiastic Rugby player and a cyclist. Mr. G. T. Goodman, of Adelaide, the other Australian member of the transport commission, will arrive in Auckland on April 24.
