STEAMER DAMAGED
CARRIED ON TO ROCK CARGO WORTH £500,000 (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, last night, A message was received from Half Moon Bay, Stewart Island, late to-night that the C. A. Larsen, the 17,000-ton mother ship of tho Boss .Sea whaling fleet, went ashore between Faro Island and the neck of Stewart Island, while proceeding up Paterson’s Inlet to her base at Price’s Bay. Slie had just returned from this season s whaling expedition in the Ross Sea, and is carrying over 80,COO barrclls of whale oil, estimated to bo worth £500,000. It is understood the steering gear failed when a strong tide carried the vessel inshore, and she struck a rode, which tore a hole in Nos. 10, 11 and 12 tanks forward. Five chasers went to her assistance and towed the boat up the inlet stern first.
The C. A. Larsen has a heavy list and is filling rapidly, her bows being almost, flush with the sea and her stern high out of the water.
The cargo will have to be transhipped, and it is stated that she will be unable to return to Norway this year. The towing operation is still in progress.
