ANNUAL CONFERENCE fP*r Press Association.) , WELLINGTON, this day. The fourteenth annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers opened yesterday, the president, Mr. C. J. McKenzie, assistant Engineer-in-Chief to the Public Works Department, presiding over an attendance of some 120 delegates.
A hearty welcome was extended to the conference by the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup. The annual report showed that the total membership of the society was now 427—members 211, honorary member 1, associates 181, students 34, as against 418 for the previous year, and 301 for 1025.
With regard to the suggested change in the name of the society to “The New Zealand Society of Engineers,” the report stated that the members of the council were practically unanimous in their disapproval of the suggestion.
On the motion of Mr. S. A. R. Mair, HuntcrVille, it was decided to take a plebiscite of members, and in so doing to forward to members a copy of the. opinions given by the council, and also a full report of the debate. It was decided to hold «the next conference in Christchurch. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. F. E. Deguerrier, Auckland; vice-president, Mr. .T. G. Alexcnder; lion, secretary, Mr. R. W. Holmes;.' council, Messrs F. W. Furkert, F. T. M. Kissell, F, C. Widdop, E. A. Shrimptou, and J. Burnett. Mr. J. A. Patterson, Wellington, was elected a life member.
