Cimubuo was wrongly included amongst tile acceptors in the Woodvillo Cup as the result of an ambiguous telegram, states a Press Association message. from Woodville. j * -Hr * *
There was an unexpected result in the Jackson Stakes, run on the second day at Wanganui, when Kiosk won from Eeremoana. The latter was made favorite, and Prince Humphrey was the only one of the three other runners who was believed to have a fair chance. The winner lay well back in the early stages, but, came on from the half-mile, where Lysander dropped out, of the race. At this point Prince Humphrey was leading the favorite, but as they reached the straight Reremoana ran up alongside Prince Humphrey, Kiosk following closely and securing a good position for the finishing run. Kiosk’s challenge found Reremoana. wanting, and in a tight finish the bay horse won by nearly half a length. A nose separated second and third.
For excellent reasons, the bracketed pair in the Middle Park Plate, run at Eiccarton on Saturday, carried the greater portion of the investments. Childe, one of the two other runners, nearly upset matters by putting in a great run from the bend, and Goblin Market had much ado to catch the other gelding. Rigmarole was not a dangerous competitor, and Full Feather, who was expected to provide a, contest for Goblin Market, proved disappointing. Childe, on the other hand, was not regarded as dangerous prior to the start.
A short head represented the margin between Sudden Storm, winner of the Craven Stakes at Riccavton on Saturday, and the next placed horse, Gold Brick. Sir George Clifford’s filly was favorite in a held of eight and after a, little trouble at the barrier failed to get away with the rest. She ran up to and through the field in good fashion, however, and after tile turn into the straight she had Gold Brick alongside and only Rascal ahead. Rascal finished third, a length behind Gold Brick, his showing giving 'general satisfaction in view of his comparative lack of preparation. Sudden Storm’s effort in tho straight was -'worthy of her breeding, shoeing great courage.
Thero were eight in the Earle Stakes field at Wanganui on Saturday, on the closing day of the autumn meeting. Of these only three, Mandane, Yoma. and Joy Bird look up the running after tho first half of the distance had beqn covered, and cracked on the pace, with Our Jack,David Garrick, Mandane and Yoma in •that order behind him. Swinging out at the turn into tho straight, the leader gave a great, chance to Mandane and Yoma, who got up level, but in a fine finish Joy Bird came on the best of the three and won by a little more than a head'hum Mandane. Had the winer kept the rails, he should liavo enjoyed a fairly comfortable victory, but on the other hand ho benefitted by tho false pace in the first half-mile. *** t *
Favorite among seven who went ouL for the Farewell Handicap at the Wanganui club’s autumn meeting, Shirley made her run from the homo turn, where High Finance held the lead. Limited, another well-baciceu runner, was last but one wjien he turned for home, but put in a good finish and justified the support given him to the extent of getting second money. * * * *
' Decreases in totalisator ■ figures are still the order of the day, despite the better financial outlook, and for the time being it is doubtful how long, it will take the totalisator to resume its old-time position as the financial barometer of the Dominion. At the Wanganui autumn meeting the machine handled £5475 less for the two days than for the corresponding day of last season, and the one-day meeting at Riccarton, held by the C.J.C., showed a totalisator deficit of £lOl, small enough, hut yet a deficit. The East Coast clubs, therefore, are not alone in the matter of totalisator decreases.
