Motof vehicles, particularly in a district such as Poverty Bay, are more and more adding to their freights to outside districts in a manner which a fetv years ago was not thought a payable proposition. It is stated that rams are now arriving at Gisborne for the ram fair in a fortnight’s time, most of those from the outside districts coming from Wairarnpa and Manawatu. In the past, they were taken to Napier and transhipped, but this year a large number have been sent by motor lorry from Napier. Motor trucks, with provision made for carrying sheep in two tiers are common on the roads of the district this season. Motor lorries with as many as three tiers have been seen on the flat roads in Hawke's Bay. The great improvement oh the roads round Auckland was the subject of comment by Mr. Grey Barton, who has just returned to Gisborne from a motor tour to the northern city. Included among the largo amount ef concreting that was being done was that on the main South road, which was now concreted from the ,citv to the turn off to Pukokoho, while a summer road had been formed as a deviation to the Itazorback; this deviation had a good surface for summer travelling, and obviated the necessity of much of the hill climbing that is necessary over the Itazorback. After leaving Auckland, Mr. Barton went to Wnitomo, thence to Arapuni, and via the Atinmuri road to Taupo and Wairakei, returning to Gisborne via Napier. The whole of the roads, with the exception of a short distance near Arapuni, which was pot-holey and dusty, were in very good order for motoring. The half-yearly meeting of the Painters’ and Decorators’ Union will be held this evening in Liberty hall.
