One of the matters which has been considered at the Imperial Agricultural Conference in England, at which Hew Zealand has been represented by. Dr. iieaki s, Dircctor-Goiieral of '■ Agricullure, is that of Soil surveys '(-writes “ Rust i cus ” in the Otago Daily Times). If was disclosed 't,hat'very little work of this nature had so far been carried out in the British Empire, but from now onwards regular surveys will be undertaken in all ■ countries. There is a vast field open for research in Hus matter, for there is tremendous waste in every country, arid particularly in 1l;o!»e within the tropics, through inadequate knowledge of the constituents of the soil. The maps which lmvo been drawn at the Cawthron Institute of some of the soils in the, Marlborough district represent tho only attempts so far made in Hew Zealand ot soil- classification.
