GOLD-STUDDED CHEESES
FRENCH MAY SALVE SUBMARINED. BRUSSELS, Dec. 5. With the most modern salvage equipment in existence, a French company expects to begin work soon to raise the Dutch liner Tubania, which was torpedoed in the North Sea, March 16, 1917, by a German submarine. The Turbania, it is presumed, was carrying secret funds for use by the German Embassy at Washington for further propaganda in America. According to gossip in Dutch ports, the money was stored in a hatch, hidden in a consignment of Dutch cheese. The Turbania is 42 miles north of Ostend, in 160 ft of water. The currents and storms render the work of the divers most perilous, but the concern involved expect to reap close to £1,000,000 in gold-studded cheeses.
