Some excitement was caused on Monday by the appearance of three sharks off the Petono beach. Immediately the alarm was given all bathers lost no time in getting on to dry land, and 1 there was soon a large crowd observing the movements of the sharks. Three men armed with a rifle put out in a boat and tired several shots, which, although they inflicted no apparent damage, evidently persuaded the visitors that they were not welcome, and they disappeared out to sea. An hour or two previously a false alarm was raised when four porpoises were disporting themselves near the mast popular portion of the beach.
