TRADING INTERESTS BOUGHT BY ENGLISH SYNDICATE Important Pacific trading interests change hands Avith the sale to an English syndicate of the old-established business of O. F. Nelson, Ltd., of Samoa, hard on the heels of the recent political developments, the transaction suggests a sensational sequel to the announcement of Mr. O. F. Nelson’s deportation from Samoa,, But the fact is that the negotiations for the sale had been in progress for the past year or two. It is believed that the price paid for the business Avas £150,000, and that Lever Brothers, the English soap manufacturers, am interested in the purchase. Tho Nelson business, Avhicli has a. paid-up capital of £150,000 (all in the family), was founded toAvards the end of last century by the Hon. O. F. Nelson’s father, a Swede who married a. Samoan. The concern prospered and its interests covered all the commodities handled in the islands. Trading stations werb established on an extensive scale throughout the group, and at these depots copra and cocoa were purchased from planters. Between the islands shipping services have been maintained by the company, Avhicli oaviis its oaviP plantations and wharves and had several small craft built in Auckland. Nelson’s, Ltd., has} offices in Auckland and Sydney and San Francisco and London agents. Air. O. F. Nelson, avlio is reputed lo be a very wealthy man, is one of several Avho have made money from trading in the islands.
