PEACE SHIELD TOURNEY RESULTS OF EARLY GAMES One of tho principal bowling events of the year was commenced on all three local greens yesterday, when the Peace •Shield, was put into competition. There were heavy entries, a pieasing feature l**ing the inclusion of fi rink from New Plymouth, including Mr. M. Nasmith, formerly prominent in Dowling circles in Poverty Bay-. The weather was kind to the bowlers, as to all other holidaymakers, and the greens were in excellent order, special care having been given them by the respective clubs in anticipation of the New Year fixjure. The organisation of the tournament was v ell up to the standard of other years, and little more need be said in praise of those responsible for the arrangements. Of the 26 rinks entered, eight were playing on the Gisborne green, eight on Kahutia, and 10,6 a Poverty Bay. Tim official opening of the tournament was undertaken on the different greens by delegates of tho Gisborne centre, Mr. 1). G. Robertson, president of the centre, speaking on the Kahutia green and extending a warm welcome to the visiting howlers. Messrs. J. J. Martin and W. J, McGibbon spoke on the Gisborne and, Poverty Bay clubs’ greens respectively, in the same strain.
