Before a large gathering oi farmers at Pahiatua, Mr. W. M. Webster, Government Veterinarian, stationed at Masterton, delivered a lecture on the common diseases of cattlo. In dealing with cattlo bloating, tho lecturer dealt briefly with the fundamental principles of feeding and the constituents of food material. In referring to contagious mammits, the lecturer said that it was never likely to be controlled by vaccination, as one attack gave no immunity, and vaccination had never been a success as a protection against any disease when immunity was not established as the result of a natural attack. Control by strict-attention to cleanliness of machines and the worker's hands, etc., aid in cheeking its spread. Low vacuum pressure and easy-fitting teat cups would also help. Thorough fomentations and massage in the early stages would cure a largo proportion of cases. Concerning contagious abor< tion, Mr. Webster said that tho department was very hopeful of at least controlling this disease as a result of a hew method of vaccination which had originated in South Africa. Preliminary tests made last year gave most promising results, and very extensive trials were in progress this Old "Jupiter Pluvious" has. asserted himself with vengeance for tho past week in the Toatoa valley. Shearing operations have como to a full stop. Only one settler has succeeded in getting a consignment of wool off in time for tho first Auckland sale. If the wet conditions continue for any length of time now wool will most likely carry a certain amount of biddy seed," which will be unfortunate. It's an ill wind that does not blow gooi somehow, and conditions have been very favorable for tho cowmen. Grass is Shaping to get ahead of the cows, the growth being abnormal. The factory is having an exceedingly successful run. The cheese output is already a good few tons ahead of tho corresponding month of last season and the flush is not reached yet. A number of herds are averaging 401 b. of milk and over per cow daily, which is good going.—Opotiki Herald. EMULSION
