TOURIST TRAFFIC
ATTRACTING AUSTRALIANS (Special to the Herald.J CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Giving his impressions of a lengthy tour of the tourist resorts of Australia, Mr. R. L. Wigley, who returned to Timaru yesterday, stated that Australia's tourist trade was swamping thelocal l'esorts and there was a possibility that the 1 overflow could be tapped and brought to New Zealand.. Mr. Wigley considered that if the Tourist Departments of the two countries combined, and the co-operation of the Railway Department and shipping companies was obtained, a round trip could be organised at greatly reduced rates, which \ would attract hundreds to New Zealand. ;.,g There is a tremendous field in Aus- yJ tralia, he said, which could be worked with a satisfactory financial outcome, for - Now Zealand. There nre plenty of people willing; to travel and plenty have money which they ai'e "willing to spend. It would pay the heads of the Australian States and New Zealand to appoint y a board, with a general organiser, to push" the tourist traffic between the two countries and America. This would be one "*• way of balancing the money going out on cars imported from America. Mr. Wigley stated that he had gone to Australia prepared to meet with a. »ood deal of jealous feeling for New Zea- ■ land, but he had encountered only the friendliest of relations on the tour.
