TOKOMARU BAY NOTES

(Herald Correspondent.) One of the largest crowds seen at the Te Ptika hall for some time assembled last evening to do honor and bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. T. G-. Buchanan, who are' leaving the district. Both the ground, floor and gallery were crowded throughout the evening', the attendance being about 350. Many residents from outlying parts as far away as Ruatoria were present. Dancing was the chief feature of the programme, with, songs at intervals by Mrs. Wilkins and Messrs. P. Hockley, H. Bignell and W. S. Thompson. Mrs. Gothwallz and Mr. Hockley were the accompanists. An up-to-date orchestra comprised entirely of local native talent added greatly to' the pleasure of the dancers. During the evening Mi\ R. 11. Wick' l steed, speaking for the residents of the East Coast, presented Mrs Buchanan with a beautiful set of silver . backed hair brushes and mirror.. Mr. Buchanan received a substantial cheque. The tribute of the natives to" Mrs. Buchanan wits a beautiful native mat made in the conventional Maori design, tlnd there was hearty applause as she placed it round Iter shoulders. Mr. Buchanan spoke briefly ;Uut feelingly Of his regret at leaving the Coast, and said he was deeply moved bv the honor dohe to his wife and himself that evening. His expressions of gratitude for the gifts were received with applause, nhd the singing of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." Supper was handed round by a large staff of helpers. Dancing was continued till 12.30 a.m. On Wednesday evening there was a largely attended" farewell"at the Masonic Hall. Tokoinaru Bay, to the Rev. ahd Mrs. -T. Figott, of Waipiro Bay, who are leaving for Hawke's Bay. The euchre tourney and musical items were much .enjoyed. A presentation was made by Mr W. Dates, senr., and Mr. and Mrs. Pigott suitably replied.
