POOR CHICAGO!
PUN WITH MAYOR '(CHICAGO, Nov. 5. ( The Mayor of Chicago “Big Bill/ Thompson, continues to afford Ins countrymen great amusement. Satirical references to his anti-British crusade are pouring in. In fact, “Big Bill” seems to have unconsciously boosted Britain far more than he intended to discredit her. Although , ignoring tho suggestion, which came from Hamilton (Ontario), that the League of .Nations should set. aside a day for prayer for the redemption of Chicago, many clergymen have startling ideas as to what might bo done by prayer for this city. Dr. George Craig Stewart, of Kt. Luke’s Episcopal Church, suggests a prayer that “we keep our good humor, and take a joke blithely, when the laugh -is on us.” .
itev, Gilkey, Baptist, wants prayers for the recovery of the city’s civic pride. “It is more than a joke to be made the laughing-stock of the world,” he declared. “Our public schools are being exploited by politicians, who care ho more for' our children than they care for the iity’s good, name.” Dr. I’liul, Lindcrman, editor of the American Lutheran, thinks that there is virtue' in “Big Bill” Thompson’s bonfire idea, .if only ho would burn the right things. Lindcrman wants many hackneyed ditties executed, including, “Oh Promise Me,” “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere,” “Beloved.- It Is Dawn,” and “Because.”
