STRIKING EXPERIMENTS

The annual report of the Department of Education shows that the expenditure for the year was £4,559,000, being the highest for any year in the history of the department. There were 9569 teachers under the department, the strength being more satisfactory than it had been for a considerable, time. The effective enrolment was 319,835.
During the period 1924-26 a mental test was carried out on 1912 schoolboys. Of the total, 22 per cent, were regarded as having an intelligence quotient of 100 or more, and per cent. 90 to ICO, or a total of 58£ per cent., of normal intelligence. A quotient of 80 to 90 was obtained by 24.7 per cent. Of those regarded as retarded, 6 per cent. ,had 75 to 80, 5£ per cent, 70 to 75, and 5 per cent, under 70. It was considered, therefore, about 10 per cent, wero definitely or probably feeble-mind-ed, and about 15 per cent, fit for education at suitable schools.
