PROVING ROMA OIL

STUNT THAT MISCARRIED OTHER PETROL SET ALIGHT BRISBANE, Oct. 27. An advertising stunt arranged by a newspaper m front of the- town hall at noon to-day misfired badly, and but for the prompt action of the town clerk, Mr. F. W. G. Anmiiul, it might have had serious consequences. The mayor, Cr. Jolly, who was present, had a narrow escape. A large glass bottle, containing about a gallon of oil from the Roma bore, was brought to the mayor. The bottle was sealed, and an attached label was signed by the mayor, of Roma, Alderman A. K Miseamble, and, the. town clerk. The mayor was asked to witness the running of a motor car with the oil. Drawn up outside tile town hall was a. big car, driven by .Mr it. A. Young. Before the capabilities of the Roma oil could be demonstrated it. was necessary to empty the petrol tank of the car, which contained ordinary petrol. This was done by the simple but, highly dangerous method of emptying the petrol into the gutter. Several of the bystanders were smoking, and one of them carelessly dropped a lighted match. Instantly the petrol dared up and ran flaming down the gutter. The car caught lire immediately, and the hood burnt fiercely, sendout a dense volume of black smoke. The other cars and bicycles lined lip outside the town hall were hastily dragged out of the reach of the flaming oil. The fire .brigade -turned out. in full force. For a moment the mayor was in a position of great danger. lie was standing behind tfie petrol tank with tho opened bottle of Roma oil in his arms when the flames leaped up. He jumped for safety, escaping with a cut thumb. Not discouraged by this another attempt was made a little later with another car, and this time with success. The mayor watched the Roma oil being poured into the tank, and, taking his seat in the car, which started quickly and smoothly, ho was driven back into the city, the first man in Brisbane to enjoy the. privilege* of riding in a motor far driven bv lioma oil.
