APPLES FOR EXPORT
POVERTY BAY SHIPMENTS It appears as though this, the third export season for Poverty Bay orchardists, -null completely eclipse the attempts of the past two years in at least the number of cases of apples sent to the Lond'on market. It is expected that last season’s export figures will be more than doubled, and that the shipment of 10,000 cases will be aimed at. These facts were given at the monthly meeting of the Poverty Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association yesterday afternoon, when it was estimated that owing to the favorable nature of the/season, and the bright prospects now revealed, with the addition of a few young orchards coming into bearing, there would bo little difficulty in obtaining a total of 10,000 cases of apples for export. Advice was also received from the Poverty Bay representative on the Fruit Export Control Board stating that if the growers so desired he would ask the board to make an attempt to have a Home boat call at Gisborne to pick up the fruit. The Only difficulty that the' meeting saw to this suggestion was that a steamer would not call unless she was assured of 10,000 cases, and this would mean that both the lato and the early fruit would' have to be shipped at the same time, c It was decided, however, to ask their representa- , tivo on the Control Board to see what arrangements Could be made, and also pointing out that, if such could he ' effected, the end of May would he the most suitable time for the vessel to call liere. The approximate export figures from Poverty Bay for the only two years over which shipments have been triads are: 1925-26, 7000 cases; 1926-27, 40CO cases.
