C.J.C. RACES

LIMERICK’S EASY CUP WIN

GREAT CHARTER’S SUCCESS

CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The weather was fair for the third day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring meeting. The attendance was up to standard.

OTAIO PLATE, one and a-quarter miles. 11-Sir Roy, 7.9 (E. Cotton) ... 1 10—Battlement, 9.1 (A. E. Ellis) 2 6 —Yoma, 9.7 (A. McGormac) ... 3 Scratched : Joy Bird. OYatrix, Front Rank and Ark Royal were preferred in that order, hut though Ark Royal was prominent for the greater part of the distance, none of the three was placed. Ark Royal was fractious at the barrier, hut got away as well as any, going. to the front with Royal Game, with Opliir third, and at the end of the first furlong the order of the first half dozen was Royal Game, Ark Royal, Battlement, Ophir, Assurance. and Yoma, all being close, with the other runners in handy touch along the back stretch, Sir Roy was close to the leaders on the rails, Royal Game at this stage holding a. half-length lead from Ark Royal. Coming to the straight, the last-mentioned pair was still in front, but Ark. Royal showed signs of failing, ahd when they reached the false rails Sir Roy got a nice run and went through to take up tho running. Battlement issued a strong challenge, lft.it could not quite get up, and Sir Roy won nicely, paying a good double-figure dividend. David Garrick, Yoma, Vawardi and Fresco were prominent Over the last furlong, and Yoma took third money, finishing close behind Battlement. Vaward was fourth. Time, 2.8 1-5. CANTERBURY CUP, of HXX) sovs.; weight-for-age. Two and u-quaffer miles. Limerick (A. 13. Ellis) 1 Footfall (F. E. Jones) 2 Star Stranger (R. Reed) 3 The only starters. In the early stages. Footfall took the lead, Star Stranger coming next, and Limerick last, the pace being very slow for the first mile. On the second circuit Star Stranger moved up, and Limerick likewise improved, this pair going out in front of Footfall and: cracking on the pace a, little, though neither was going all out. With six furlongs to go Limerick' was a half length in front of Star Stranger, with Footfall a- little further back. A furlong further on, Limerick suddenly opened up a lead of two lengths from Star Stranger * and Footfall began to make his run. It was obvious that Limerick would not bo beaten, and it was merely a question of how much Footfall would beat Star Stranger home by. Limerick won by four lengths from Footfall, Star Stranger crossing the line five lengths behind tho second 1 horse. The time was 3.59.

The winner, looking none the worse for his exertion, returned to the birdcage to receive a warm round of cheering and applause, Christchurch patrons having seen all 100 little of Mr. Knight’s champion since his two-year-old season.

JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP, of 1000 sovs.; one mile.

Great Charter, 7.G (Tiro) . . 1 Grand Knight, ■ 5.13 (B. 11.

Morris) 2 Sot Sail, 5.2 (0. Emerson) . . 3

All started. Grand Knight was made favorite in a good field. From a good start Great. Charter assumed the lead, Civility quickly yielding seeoiul position to Set Sail, with Beacon Light and Mandanc both well up in the early stages. Groat Charter set, up a lead of two lengths in the front half of the distance, with Reromoana in second position at the halfmile post, the order thereafter being Mandane, Grand Knight, Set Sail, Civility, and Ihe rest hunched. Coming into the straight Great Charter was still holding the lead and going nicely, but Reremoana was finding his weight a bit severe, and soon gave way to Grand Knight, who challenged the leader at the distance, but was beaten bff. Centrepiece put in a good run from the bend, but could not get up, and Set Sail filled third place. Great Charter won by two lengths, with four lengths separating second and third horses. Civility finished fourth. Time, 1.39 3-5.

N.Z. OAKS STAKES, of 750 sovs.; for three-year-old fillies; weight 8.10. One and a-half miles. Wild pfgeon (B. IT. Morris) ... I Boreo (It. Reed) 2 Vigilance (Waddell) 3 Scrambler was fourt];, No others started. Won by four lengths, and two lengths. Time, 2.36 3-5. The order of favoritism in the Canterbury Cup was: 1 Limerick, 3 Footfall, 2 Star Stranger. In the Jockey Club Handicap the order of favoritism was: 8 Great Charter, 1 Grand Knight, 5 Set Sail. ACCEPTORS OMITTED Two outstanding instances of acceptors for important events at the C.J.C. meeting being omitted from the lists of acceptances received by telegraph have occasioned a idmsiderabl’e amount of comment. The acceptances for the New Zealand Derby, run on Monday, did not include Agri’on, which went out a popular favorite and fully justified confidence by winning fairly comfortably. Yesterday another (important 'Omission was made, Mandane not being included in the Jockey Club Handicap; acceptors, while Wingatui, which had not accepted, was included. The error on this occasibn was not of such moment, as Mandane was not placed in the race to-day, although it was well favored previously. The conflict in the acceptances received by telegram and those broadcast from Christchurch last night prompted inquiries through the'' telegraph office, and it is clear that the department’s service was responsible for the mistake. Tlie acceptances handed into the telegraph office by tlie Press Association agent at Christchurch yesterday included Mandane, but Wingatui was not mentioned.
