Providing that the money rained on (he petrol lax in spent entirely on roads, and riot put into the Consolidated Fund, the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce will support I ho tax.
At a meeting of the National Coursing Association, held in Dunedin last evening, .the Wairarapa Club (Masterton) was allotted control of the New Zealand Waterloo Cup meeting for .1928. The fixture will be held in July.
The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce last evening decided to write to the Government supporting the. abolition of the preference to unionist clause and the payment by results clause as outlined in the amending Bill to the Arbitration Act. A motor lorry, driven by Hunt, a resident of Taita, Wellington, collided with a motor cyclist at Tokomaru last evening. The collision was not serious, but the lorry got out of control, landing in the ditch and the driver' was pitched through the windscreen, suffering severe cuts»and a broken leg. He was admitted to The Palmerston North hospital. The police yesterday raided the billiard saloon of Arthur H. Chunn in Greymouth and the residence of James Hassall, as a result of which both were charged later before Justices with keeping common gaming houses. James Hclfcrnan was charged with assisting in the conduct of the former, while .14 men found in the saloon were charged with being in a common gaining house. All the cases were remanded till Monday, except those against four seamen, who'se vessels were timed to leave at night. The Court decided to deal with their cases. The, police offered no evidence, and the informations were dismissed.
