HERE AND THERE
(P.A. Messages.) The quarterly sitting of the Supreme Court in Palmerston North commenced this morning before Mr. Justice Ostler, who congratulated the district on Us comparative absence of crime. Fivecases would be presented to the Grand Jury, none of them of a serious nature. In four the Grand Jury would have no difficulty in finding true bills. In the other case there were peculiar circumstances. One snan was charged with the theft of furniture and jewellery. His wife claimed that it was hers. In law it was laid down that a husband or wife could not be guilty of the theft of each Other's property while living together. The Grand Jury had to be satisfied that there was sufficient evidence that the parlies were living apart before sending the, case fur trial'." True bills were returned in the following cases: David Laing, alleged unlawful carnal knowledge; Gins. Adams, alleged indecency; Mitchell Hannah, alleged breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime: William John Porter, alleged theft. No bill was returned in the case of Andrew McEwan, alleged theft of property, special reference to which case was made by His Honor. Mr. Justice MaeGrcgor complimented the Napier district on the absence of. serious crime. Addressing the Grand Jury on the case arising from a fatal motor accident, the judge said motorists had to observe the rule of the road, refrain from speeding, and keep a good look out.
