RAILWAY LOSSES
'BUS COMPETITION. MELBOURNE, October 26. Mr. F. Chappie, representing the Australian Railway Union in its plaint before Sir John Quick in the Commonwealth Arbitration Court, said in reply to questions by his Honor to-day that as a result of 'bus competition losses of £58,000 and £54,000 were .sustained on certain railway lines in Melbourne during the years 1925 and 1925 respectively. Figures for this year showed considerable improvement .as many of the 'buses had failed to carry on. Mr. H. Swaney (for the Victorian Railway Commissioners): The matter was gone into in May last and the annual loss due to motor 'buses and touring cars was set down at £24,000. Sir John Quick: Most serious ! Later Sir John Quick said that he would like to know the actual losses arising on the railways from pilfering. Mr. Swaney: In the neighborhood of £20,000. All large railway services have considerable expenditure arising from losses and damage to goods. The amount of £20,000 in relation to £12,000,000 M revenue is not such a large item as it might appear. Sir John Quick : But why should there be £20,000? Mr. Swaney: If is unprcvcntable.
