WAIROA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

(Herald Correspondent.)

The Woiroa Chamber, of Commerce met on Wednesday night Present; Messrs. H. Grout (retiring president), Rice, Chamberlain, <!. 0. t'letclier, A. W. Wbyte, E. L. Thomson, 11. Ei. Man lon unci T. Lambert.

On the motion of Mr. Lambert, seconded by Mr. Chamberlain, Mr. (!. C Fletcher was elected president, the motion being carried by acclamation. —It was proposed by Mr. Chamberlain, and seconded by'Mr. Rice that Mr. A. W. Whyte be' vice-president. Mr. 11. L. Ratcliffe was re-elected secretary and treasurer. The president, vice-president and secretary were appointed the committee.

The .statement of receipts and expenditure showed the former to have been £2B 12s 2d. including a balance of £ll 16s 2d from last year. The expenditure came to £22 6s 2d. leaving a- credit of £6 6s. Speaking to the annual report, the retiring president said it was a great pity more of the business men did not support the chamber by joining it, as tho Government was now more than ever seeking the opinions of chambers of commerce.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Br. Fletcher then took the chair, and thanked the chamber for electing him. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Grout for his services during the year, for which he briefly returned thanks Correspondence was read from Mr. P. J. O'Kano regarding the petition of the" Audkeen settlers, the position being still unaltered. At the same time, the settlers were thankful for the chamber's assistance on their behalf. No reply having been received to tho chairman's request that the closing time of the outward Nanier mail be altered from 11.3 C a.m. to 3.30 p.m.. it was decided to again write to the Postmaster-General on the subject, and to send a -opy of the letter to the chief postmaster in Napier: The question, of holding only quarterly meetings was mooted, but did not find much favor with members, being considered a retrograde stet>. Mr. Stanton suggested asking leading men to send papers in order to popularise the chamber, and the suggestion was noted. A fresh effort is to l>c made, to increase the membership-
