MANSION BLAZE
THE MAIDSTONE TRAGEDY (Australian a.KI N.^Cjbte Tho five in the Wateringbury Hall country mansion near Maidstone, was discovered by a passerby, who saw the flames. The house was in darkness and everybody in bed. The household were aroused by stones being thrown at the windows. . r A housemaid telephoned the n.e brigade, which arrived in a quarter ot an hour, but the flames then had such a hold that there was little hope of saving the house or the inmates, three servants made adventurous escapes from bedroom windows, hut there, was no hope from the beginning lor the huml>, Major Bazlev White, D. 5.0., aged years, his wife, and child aged four, and i nurse. 55 years of age. They slept in another wing Of the house, which was practically burned down when the brigade arrived. . ... Firemen, policemen and vlll “S«' s worked all night and only recovered the bodies in the morning.
