COOK HOSPITAL CONTROL

BOARD’S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Cook Hospital Board was held yesterday afternoon, the chairman, Mr. W. G. Shcrralt, presiding. There were also present: Messrs D. W. Coleman. W. W. Shanks, M. T. Trafford, J. El Benson, C. H. Bridge, C. G. Bavliss, M. W. Craig, H. J. F. Tombleson, G. B. Oman, and H. Kenway. Accounts amounting to £-1630 11s were passed for payment.

The Director-General of Health wrote in reference to the board’s letter forwarding an account for £2B 7s bd, the salary of one nurse at the Tolaga Bay hospital, and stated that lie could find no record of any arrangement for the department to pay the account. lie. had no objection, however, to recommending the Minister to approve the payment annually of the salary of one of the nurses, but, before doing so ho would be glad to have particulars of the arrangement quoted by the board. —It was decided to forward the information.

The Waipawa Hospital Board wrote requesting information in reference to friendly society patients.—The secretary’s action in forwarding the information was confirmed.

The secretary of the Waiapu Hospital Board advised that his board wished that the matter of patients’ fees should be placed before the Minister for his ruling.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the Minister.

The finance committee reported that the medical superintendent had waited on the ooipmittee aud mentioned that he was uot satisfied with the firefighting appliances at present at the hospital. —It was agreed that the fire inspector should be asked to look into the matter and submit a report to the board.

The medical superintendent reported that 133 patients had been admitted during the month and 123 discharged; there had been six deaths, and the number remaining in the hospital was 132. The bafctoriologieal department had examined 034 specimens. There were at present no soldiers in the hospital, one having been admitted and discharged during the month.

Nurse E. Pritchard, district nurse, Matawai, reported having attended and advised 50 cases during the month. Nurse R. Turner, district native nurse, Te Karaka, reported having attended and advised 38 cases during the month, and. having visited six Maori pas. The custodian of the Memorial Home reported that during the month three men and one woman had been

admitted, and seven men discharged, leaving 12 men and nine women in the institution. Vegetables to the amount of £5 17s 4d had been supplied to Ihe hospital during September. Visits had been paid by the Salvation Army Band, Baptist and Presbyterian Christian Endeavor societies, and the Mailiui party.

The engineer reported that the rewiring of the electric lights in the domestic quarters had been completed and brought up to the requirements of the new regulations. The new A C. motors for the laundry machines were being erected, • and would be ready for the change over. The Power Board had erected the new mains from the engine-room to the main buildings, and it was expected lo change over in a few days. The work of installing the now lighting system similar to ward has been started in ward 4. Repairs had been made about the buildings and alterations made in the engine-room for the change over. Repairs that were necessary had been made to the electric light, sanitary, water services, etc. The steam heaters were in continujil use (ill September 'JO, and owing to the cold weather at the end of the month they had to be put on for a few nights. The new motor and gear for.the milking plant at the hospital farm had been installed by Niven and Co., and was working satisfactory. The electric light has been put into the cow bails and separator rooms, and two water tanks were being erected at the farm house. The coal consumption was: September, 34 tons 13cwt. 2qrs., costing £l3B 14s; August, 37 tons 3cwt. 3qrs., costing

£l4B 11s; Julv, 37 tons -lcwt., costing £l4B His. Sister M. A. Hughes, in charge- of the Tolaga Bay hospital, reported that there had been eight admissions and live discharges during the month, leaving four patients in the hospital. The reports were adopted.
