TOUCHING MEMORIAL

VIMY RIDGE DISCOVERY

GRANGE TUNNEL INTACT

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. 1 LONDON, Oct, 18.

Canadian engineers, preparing the Vim)' Ridge memorial site, discovered the famous Grange tunnel with miles of underground passages, pushed out within a few yards of the German lines. The Vimy Ridge entrance was choked up and tangled, and is exactly in the condition it was in in li>l7.

This is the only original intact portion on the entire Western front of the battlefields. The duel-boards lie in the trenches and the officers' beds are rotting nnd collapsed. Tn the chalk dugouts hundreds of mimes and many messages written on the chalk ill indelible pencils are as fresh as a decade ago. Mills bombs lie on the ledges with cans of bully beef, till hats and rusting rifles. The chalk is Still blackened from tho smoke of the candles set in the niches to light the passages. The authorities are preserving intact what is destined to be one of the most touching memorials and one of the most remarkable relics of the Great War.
