Charles Herbert Avery, middle-aged, retired, living at 22 Somers street, Stanley Bay, Auckland, was found dead this morning, his throat having been cut with a razor. Mr. 11. 15. Hammond. Director of Town Planning, being desirous.of returning to private practice, is not seeking re-appointment beyond the middle of January next. His term of office expired last' month. It is intended to invite applications, in New Zealand for a successor. The body of John Downing, the eldest of the three boys drowned in the Heathcote river,. Christchurch, on Monday, was recovered last evening a few yards below the place where tho first body was found. The Customs Amendment Bill was received in the Legislative Council from the House yesterday, and read a first time, being'set down for its second reading to-day. Replying to Mr. V. H. Ernest Williams, motor proprietor, was charged in Rotorua yesterday with disobedience of a maintenance order in respect to two children. The magistrate, after giving defendant every opportunity to make an offer, sentenced him to six months' gaol, with hard labor, in Mt. Eden prison, staling that deliberate, defiance of the eour£ could not be permitted.
