FANCY DRESS DANCES

FUNCTIONS AT WAIPAOA The, annual fancy di'ess ball held under the, auspices of the Kaitaratahi Public Hall Association at Waipaoa on Thursday night was in ©very respect a great success. The committee spared no effort in its endeavor to make the evening a pleasant and enjoyable one. About 200 couples travelled from many parts of the district, to be in attendance, the number being almost a record for these functions, i. The fancy costumes were quite Up to .standard, and as numerous as usual, and no easy task was set the judges. The prizes were awarded as follow : —Ladies : Most original, Miss Duncan (" Red Bus "J; best fancy dress, Miss Eddy (Spanish girl); most humorous, Mrs. Pirie (" Mum-"). Gentlemen: Most original, Mr. Clarke ("Dad"); best fancy dress, Mr. Single (Sheik); most humorous, Mr. G. .Rogers (" Charlie's Aunt ".

Great credit is due to the ladies committee for the artistic manner "in which the hall was decorated. Mesdames Allen and Bridges acted as judges of the fancy dresses, and Mr. Len. Ore-swell was" M.C Mi's. Thomson's orchestra was iii attendance.

CHILDREN'S HALL jA very happy evening Was spent by the children at the hall at Waipaoa on Friday, when they wero entertained \hy the Hall Association at a fancy 'dross ball. The fancy dresses wore not quite so numerous as last yeiir, Juit a. high standard was maintained, indicating the time and interest taken by pnrents and children in this annual function. Mosdanies Huinhprey and '•Shanks and Miss' Young acted as fudges. The prizes were awarded as follows: Girls. —Doreen Gritton (Riekotts' Blue"), mos,t original; Molly Farrow ("Good Luck"), best fancy dress; Audrey Pirie ("Organ Grinder"), 'most humorous; Barbara Pirie ("Earlv Victorian "), special. Boys.— Buster' Pilcher ("Chef"), "most original; Cecil Croswell ("Professor"), best fancy dross; Randall Ueffer ("Nigger"), most humorous: 'Best pairs.—Jean Fyfe and Francis Flanagan ("Darby and Joan"), 'Diana and. Mick Parkinson ("Brittania and Captured Hun Trade"). The president took the opportunity to thank the ladies for the interest Hhey had .taken in the social activities "of the association, the success of >which greatly depended on their 'efforts. He also thanked the donors of prizes for the children. Mrs. 'Humphreys commented favorably on the fancy dresses. Mrs. P. Shanks' gift of a football to the school children was greatly appreciated and wns received on behalf of the children by Master Mclnemy.

During the evening items wore given by Master Randall Heffer, and Miss •Collin danced a sword dance and HighManel Fling. Mrs. Croswell was in •"charge of the children, and Misses 'Matheson, Pirie, Croswell, and Master McMiim supplied the music.
