COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT " With the exception of a few fine days, wet weather has been experienced, ending in floods, since last meeting," stated the engineer when reporting to the. recent meeting of _ the Waiapu County Council. " Owing to Hooded streams, traffic was held up from two to three days on the. main highway. The clay portions of the district roads have now assumed their winter conditions, and will remain so until the spring, unless exceptionally fine weather is experienced. So far nothing serious has been reported in the way of damage from floods, except some minor slips on the main highway on 'the Kopuaroa hill and the. Kai-Inanga hill. The worst feature is a slight subsidence and cracking on the Kai-Inanga hill. Stream crossings at Kopuaroa No. 1 and No. 4 have silted up and caused trouble, to cars travelling on this section of highway, also at flic Wairoa stream crossing near Waiomataliiii. The only two construction works on band now arc tho Kopuaroa. No. 4 bridge and the Poroporo bridge. Very little progress could be made on these since last meeting, owing to the weather conditions. The number of men employed on all works has now been reduced to 29, and 14 horses have been put off for the winter months. Seven weeks ago 68 men were employed, apart from those engaged on contract work. " I should like to draw the council's attention to the carting of timber from Gisborne to Tokomaru Bay during the wet weather. The carters are defying the council in the matter, and are saying that they will not keep off the road."
