A good many slips 'occurred on the railway and deviation cuttings.

During the recent Hood m the Wairoa and AloJiaka rivers hundreds of tons of timber came down, much of it subsequently being cast up on the beach. Townspeolpe have since been very busy collecting the wood, a considerable part of which was above the average quality. During the 12 months ended on .March 31, the consumption of electricity in the borough has increased in a manner satisfactory to the l’ower Board. The average maximum demand rose to 224 k.v.n., as against 150 k.v.a. for the previous year. The total number of units received was 855,792, as against 590,948. The cost was ,63d per unit, and the revenue was £2321 9s 6jd, as against £lO7l 5s 3d the previous year. The weather was very unpropitious for the children’s fancy dress party in aid of the Wairoa district high school piano fund. There was, however, a very fair attendance of children, about 100 taking part in the grand march, whilst there were 300 in the second. The costumts were both quaint and varied, and the prizes were allotted as follows : Miss Zita Swain and R. Knight 1, Aliss R, Green and Horton Wade 2. Another of Wairoa’s oldest residents has passed away in the persons of Airs. O. Drysdale (nee Winter), wife of Mr. W. Drysdnle, of Marumaru, at the age of 53. The deceased, who was born in Wairoa, was a daughter of the lale Martin anrl Jane Winter, themselves pioneers of the troublous ’sixties. Airs, lfrysdale had not been in good health for some time, and her death resulted from pneumonia. She leaves, besides her husband, a family of 10 children, live sons and live daughters, to mourn their loss; also a brother, Mr. V. E. Winter, and three sisters, Airs. J. Davies, Airs. At. Smith, and Airs. A. B. Smith. The remains were interred in the Wairoa cemetery on Alonday afternoon, the Rev. W. R. Alilne officiating at the. church (St. Andrew’s) and at the graveside. Before Messrs. J. Oorkill and H. L. Darker, J’s.P., George William Nelson Wildermoth was charged with having obtained £1 from F. H. Pert by misrepresentation that ho was J. H. Dixon, bandmaster of the St. Kilda band. Accased was further charged with having stolen a towel from the s.s. Tangaroa. Pleading guilty, accused was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on the first charge, and one month on the second count. —William Campbell and Thomas Victor King wore convicted on charges of drunkenness and being idle and disorderly persons. They were ordered to leave the town within 24 hours.
