MAIZE POOL
A QUEENSLAND MOVEMENT
BRISBANE, June Id
In North Queensland, with opera-: lions mainly applicable to the Atherton Tableland and other parts served by the port of Cairns, a maize pool lias for some years. been in operation, but central and southern areas have, on two occasions turned down propositions for what is officially termed co-operative marketing. Another effort is in progress to take the whole of the .State into the scheme, and probably it Will be successful, as the Wheat Hoard on the Darling Downs —having very little to do by way of managing a. wheal crop—has agreed to co-ordinate and >uake its stores available. A point put up is that of the Australian States Queensland is the only one which runs to a maize surplus and that, the surplus would be absorbed by Victoria and New South Wales, which do not produce enough for their requirements. That, would mean practically a special cover for the Queensland surplus.
The idea of the Maize Pool is not to seek high prices, but to develop a scheme which would prevent, tin! very low prices of a glut period ami the very high figures later on when Shortage occurs. It is true that tlni farmer does not now fully share ii( appreciated prices, ami suffers, when his maize is sold at, say, a bushel, It. is not proposed to seek any Glow eminent help in I lie . scheme, except by tariff.
