SOUTH AFRICAN FLAG SENATE ALTERS DESIGN PROMINENCE FOR UNION JACK (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.i (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received June 28, 11 n.m.) CAPETOWN, June 27. The Senate carried the second read,ing ot’ the Flag Bill, but in committee an amendment was moved making' for a new design giving the Union Jack and two former Republican flags one quarter each, the remaining quarter to be occupied by four stars on an azure field, representing the four provinces in the Union: The Union Jack has the top left-hand corner. The Government’s flag has the same arrangement on a small shield in the centre of the old Holland flag.
The Government is in a minority in the’Senate, and General Hertzog resisted the new design, declaring that the Union .Tack had a position of dominance, and that the Dutch would never accept it. The Senate carried the amendment, and the Bill'will now he referred to the Assembly for the latter’s concurrence.
