PROPOSED CHANGES IN CUSTOMS TARIFF
BIG CLEARANCES PROM BONDED STORES A mild panic has set in in Dunedin in regard to clearances from bonds, and a merchant stated on -Saturday that there had been a big clearance of spirits, principally of whisky, from bonds during the week. Though no authentic information seems to be available on the subject, .the feeling of merchants in Dunedin is that there is likely to be an increase in the duty on spirits, and apparently nothing is being left to chance. Several wholesale merchants report clearing tobacco in anticipation of an increase in the tariff, hut, the representative of one firm which was approached on the matter said that lie knew of no foundation for the jumor, but. the opinion seems to'bo held generally’ that some change is likely.
Dunedin tobacconists know little of a likely increase in tlie duty on tobacco, and one stated that it was generally considered that they contributed a big enough portion to the Customs tariff as it was, and that an alteration was not likely, except, perhaps, ill one line.
