TO BE ERECTED IN HEART OF CITY. SYDNEY, dmie 16. New South Wales is paying a tardy act of justice to the men who enlisted from tlie mother State, during the war. It is at last erecting a, State memorial to them, and in the most lilting of settings, in the opinion of most people in the community, even if architects • may not wholly agree with them on that point. Martin Place, whose history is largely one of humanitarian effort in a hundred and! one causes, notably the movements during the war for the fighting forces, is to he the scene of the memorial. It is in the very heart of tlie city. The memorial will occupy almost the precise spot where the platform stood from which most of the great recruiting appeals were delivered. The memorial, designed by Sir Bertram Muckennal, will contrast strongly with the general design of war memorials, which, in nearly severy instance, are based on the cenotaph or column idea. It will consist Of three large granite layers surmounted by a massive altar stone weighing 20 tons, at each end of which wifi be bronze figures, one representing a soldier and the other a sailor, standing at ease, and attired in battle order. In tlie centre of the altar stone will ho a bronze wreath. On One side of tho stone will bo the words, “Lest we forget,” and on the other side, “To our glorious dead.” In one of Sydney s busiest and most crowded streets, immersed in the grey routine of daily life this national memorial should not bo without inspirational effect, v
