AUSTRALIAN MISSION

SUGAR CANE INDUSTRY CELOTESE MANUFACTURE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.; (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.; , (Received June 27, noon.) NEW YORK, June 25. The Australian Mission inspected a sugar factory at which a new process of ' refining sugar is claimed to reduce the present costs by 50 per cent. Queensland members regard the process as of great value to Australia owing to the present high costs. I The mission also inspected a celotex , factory where 1.000,000 square feet of celotex is produced daily from megrass, a residue of sugar. A Cane Co. is being registered in Australia, anticipating the erection of a factory within two years. Speaking at a luncheon, Dr. Itosenfeld, consulting technologist to the American Sugar Growers’ League, warned Queensland to prevent disease destroying the <?ane crops. Owing to an outbreak of d : sease in Louisiana the crop dropped in 1919 from 500,000 tons to 50,000 tons in 1926. The ravages were checked by developing varieties immune or tolerant towards the disease. Mr. McNeil, in responding, said he trusted Queenslanders would take steps to prevent a similar occurrence. The mission is departing for Houston, Texas, on Sunday, to investigate cotton. Messrs. Matthews and Mac Kay. having completed their report, which it is understood makes no recommendations, batstates the facts as disclosed concerning the employment of women, have left for Mexico City, and will rejoin the mission in. San Francisco. Mr. Murphy declined to authorise the visit which the observers .have undertaken at their own expense
