BURWOOD MURDER
WHO IS "CHARLIE"? A Sydenham woman who was in the confidence of Gwendoline Scarif, the victim of the Burwood murder, states that the girl visited her late on the Sunday afternoon prior to the tragedy. Miss Scarif had acted as her nursegirl three years ago, and frequently visited her, particularly during the last nine months. To her friend the girl disclosed the story of her life, her financial position, and her relationship with a married man referred to as "Charlie." A week or more before the murder Miss Scarif told her that she and "Charlie" were going north together to a man who lived about 150 miles from Wellington, and who had work for them both to go to. Everything was ready for her departure, but she said she was surprised when Miss Scarf! visited her at 10.30 a.m. on the Sunday following. The girl explained thai a telegram had come stating that the work near Wellington would not he available for a. week. At 4.50 p.m. Miss Scarif, after being with her friend all day, looked at her watch and said that' she must be going as she had to telephone to "Charlie" at halfpast 5. Miss Scarif made a. clean breast of the whole position. Time and time again, her confidant, said, she had tried to deflect her from the course she seemed determined to pursue. Miss Scarif was happy and lively on the Sunday she visited Sydenham.
