TRAGIC ROMANCE OF THE NEW DIAMOND FIELD.
There is a strange romance connected with the discovery of diamond deposits at the mouth of the Orange River. The field was discovered by the late Mr. F. C. Cornell, traveller, explorer, and big game shot. 'His discovery was;not apparently known in South Africa, but in February, 1921 he told a newspaper correspondent that he had come upon the most extraordinary wealth of diamonds and pointed out in the strictest confidence to a friend the position, on the map. He also found rich deposits of semiprecious stones, and he had with him in London many specimens of singular beauty. One of the objects of hia journey to Europe was to arrange for the marketing of the stones. He had wealth almost beyond the imagination of avarice within his reach when he was killed by a motor accident, at the Marble Arch in March, 1824.
