FRENCH BAN ON “REDS”
SENTENCE ON A DEPUTY
A DRAMATIC INCIDENT
(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) PARIS, June 18.
A debate in the Chamber on the subject of an order for the arrest of the Communist Deputy, Doriot, progressed in an atmosphere of tension, owing to a rumor that Doriot would make a dramatic entry, but there was no appearance of him. Doriot was last heard of in Moscow. Ho was sentenced in his absence last year to 18 months’ imprisonment on a charge of anti-militarist propaganda in connection with the war in Morocco. He still has the right to appeal to the court. There is another prosecution for alleged treasonable conduct and speeches while on a visit to China.
A debate followed the decision of M. Bart ho u that- Doriot should be arrested imediately and returned to France, but was nullified by the announcement that Doriot had exercised his right of appeal. Further action is therefore suspended. Great surprise was caused at a subsequent Communist meeting. Cachin was speaking when Doriot walked in On the commotion subsiding, Cachin finished his speech and claimed an amnesty for deputies against whom proceedings were instituted, after which Doriot took off his coat, rolled up his sleeves, and amidst prolonged cheering dealt with the Chinese revolution and the syndicalist movement.
