Kayson, of Melba trie, vl:o fitted up tho Port Hardy, in •vine.a a trial shipment of chilled oeef was recently made from Queensland, stated on Saturday that no steamers were »m le suitable than th.e bay liners. 'J he space between decks afforded excellent accommodation, and the loss of : pace, wl sch bad been a factor in the costs of transport on other boats, would bo reduced to a minimum. The bay steamers had the speed, which was a very important consideration, as the Port Hardy shipment had proved that on a voyage extending up to a period of 60 days the -Vuitral-an chilled, beef could be landed in excellent condition. The nay liners also had a definite sailing date, which meant a good deal in developing this trade. M. s-t of the Port Hardy shipment had been slaughtered 10 days prior to loading. The cost of fitting out the bay steamers would be comparatively light, and if tho experiment was tried for a season he was confident that the Australian beef cently made freom Queensland, stated on fillip. -t'he vessel could Me ntted while on tiie Australian coast. Works in Queensland, Mr. Ray;on said, were closed down owing 10 the low prices and the fact that frozen beef was practically unsaleable in the markets of the United Kingdom.
