A RUDE AWAKENING
BRIDEGROOM CHARGED WITH FALSE PRETENCES SYDNEY, May 10. ' The dillers at a fashionable city hotel to-day wondered why a pretty and particularly happy-lookiug girl, who was seated at a table with a well-dressed and handsome man, burst into tears and almost collapsed when two men approached them and whispered something to her companion. The girl, who had been married only three days, learned that her husband was to be charged with false pretences. The detectives had been searching for a Mail who is alleged to have passed a number of valueless cheques. They discovered yesterday that, many of the cheques were accepted by city firms, and some were passed in country towns, it is stated that nearly £.1700 is concerned. The police heard of a matt who "came to the city and met a girl, who fell desperately in love with him. He did his best to show the girl that he Was possessed of money, and entertained her on a lavish scale, He had not known her long before he proposed marriage, and the gii‘l, considering herself extremely lucky to win the love of such a man, readily accepted him. It is said that the police in other stales will bo interested to learn of the arrest.
