THE EGMONT STEEPLECHASE

Passin’ Through was slightly better favorite than Llewellyn for the Egmout Steeplechase, the principal jumping event at the races at Hawera on Thursday, with Peter Rosa the best backed of the others. From the start to finish it always looked either Peter Rosa or Llewellyn, and in the finish Llewellyn beat Peter Rosa by just over a length. Llewellyn ran- dew-, his fences all the time and- interfered with Peter Rosa several times, especially tunning for the last fence. At the same time it did not appear to affect the result. Lady Comet was well up with the leading pair foi a round,, and then she hit the sod wall, which sent her back, hut. she was up thi I'd again on . the last circuit. However, over, the last half mile the Auckland pair ran away from her, and' she finished several lengths back. Passin' Through was well up in fourth place when lie fell at the sod wall the last time, and he would have made a more interesting finish. None of the others was at all prominent. The sod wall the last time round settled Birkenella, and all that- could be said for the bunch was that they got round. Charlatan was a poor fourth and did not jump well. Burt and Me B realty were nothurt, apart from the latter losing some skin off his face.
