GISBORNE-NAPIER LINE
TO WAIHUA IN TWO YEARS j DEPARTMENT’S PREDICTION In a letter to the Poverty Bay provincial executive of the New Zeat land Farmers’ Union with-reference to the Napier-Wnir'oa railway extension; the commercial manager of the Rail way Department, Mr. D. Radio, advised that the following sections would be ready for traffic approximately’ as under:
Waikoau to Putorino, 15 miles, 1$ tc two years’ time. ' , Wairoa to Waihua, 12f miles, lj to two years’ time. When the sections were ready it would bo possible for the Poverty Ray settlers to transport li\ r e stock as’under: Nuhaka to Wailiua bv rail, approximately 33 miles; Wailiua to Putorino by. road, 28 yiiles; Putorino to Whakatu or other stations by rail. “Until the route is finally measured up,” the letter continued, “the mileages quoted can only he taken as an estimate of the distance, but I do not think there will be much variation.
“The combined railage charges per wagon on cattle or sheep from Nuhaka to Wailiua and Putorino to the- fob. lowing stations will be: Whakatu £4 4s 3d, Tomoann £4 ss, Paki Paid £4 lbs Id. : ’; / ‘ ' . 1 , 7 “I understand . that., .the section Putorino to Wailnla will be ready' to, link up when the Mohaka viaduct is completed, probably in 41 to five years ’time. Should 1 obtain further int’ormatiou regarding the completion of the line, 1 shall have much pleasure in advising of same.”
