Prior to the commencement of business at the Hospital Board meeting the chairman, in moving that a letter of condolence be sent to Mrs Somerville and family, spoke feelingly of the loss the town aind ' district had sustained by the death of Dr. Somerville. The motion was carried in silence, all members standing. Sir George Hunter, member for Waipnwa, was a visitor to Wniroa during the week.

The Government land purchase officer is visiting this district. Mr. F. N. Thompson, district engineer, Napier, lias been on an official visit to Ivopuawharu, Mahia district. The following are visiting Mr. and Mrs G. C. Ormond at Mahia: Miss Fanny Ormond (Napier) and Lady Roberts (England). The Hospital Board lias decided to grant Miss Melville, late matron of the hospital, a year's leave of absence without pay and a pension of £3O per year at the board’s pleasure. Mrs Wright, of To Reinga, and Mrs Evans, of Waikatea, have offered to hold a dance in tlicir locality in aid of the newly-formed Wairoa branch of the Plunket Society.

Mr. Benjamin, who has been appointed engineer to the H.B. Power Board, was formerly the Wairoa representative of Vickcrman and Lancaster.

During the year the Sa-vnge Club has lost a vice-rangatira in Dr. .Somerville, and a member in the person of the late Mr. L. 11. Fox. Their deaths were marked at the annual meeting of the club by those present all standing in silence for a short time. Mr. G. C. Ormond has been re-elect-ed patron of the Wairoa Savage Club, and Mr. C. V. Chamberlain, chief rang Mira.

Dr. E. B. Jardine has been appointed anaesthetist to the Wairoa hospital, vice Dr. Somerville, deceased.

At the Hospital Board meeting Dr. Hallwright reported: “I should like to mention that a number of patients coming to hospital arrive in a drunken condition. Frequently, after being soon by a doctor, they go to an hotel, and are in a disgraceful state when they arrive.” The board passed two motions on the subject, one, that the matron use her discretion in admitting such, and the other, that no intoxicated patients be admitted unless the delay would be disadvantageous to the patient. Waikokopu lias been kept busy of late, the Northumberland, Pakura, Make, Gunbar, Miro and the Parera working the port.

The second of the socials in connection with the Convent schools drew a large attendance. In the card game the winners wore: Ladies’ prize—Airs F. Heisc 1, Miss Pees 2. Gentlemen —Mr. Murdock 1, Mr. H. Hutchinson

After inspecting the ladies’ restroom in Coronation Square, the Plunkett Society decided it was not suitable as a meeting place for ladies and the nurse. Mr. Gillespie, in the meantime, has-.granted the use of a room, and the Mayor is to be further interviewed in regard to a suitable public room.

During last month 29 patients were admitted to the Wairoa Hospital, 34 were discharged, and 13 remained in at the end or the month. There were four deaths three being those of very aged people. There were ten operations.

Mrs M. A. Torr is reported to be ill.
