WOMEN WITH TWINS

“BETTER THAN M’sJ».” LONDON, May 2. Lady Astor (Unionist) caused roars of laughter in the House of Commons today, when, in a fighting speech, she turned sharply on her critics, notably Capt. Bourne (Unionist), and said, “I know some women, who, if they had twins every year, would be more efficient than many members of Parliament” The House was discussing a private bill to regulate the employment of married women. “While every woman naturally wants a home,” said Lady Astor, “some, like the men, have made the home—well, Til be frank—made it hell. It is nonsense to say married women should be kept by their husbands. There are scores of men, even in the House of Commons, who are kept by their wives.” Sir Basil Peto (Unionist) opposed the Bill, because it ignored plain biological and physiological facts “God did not make the two sexes equal,” he said, “and we cannot do it on a Friday afternoon!” The House rejected the Bill, one of the chief aims of which was to prevent marriage being a bar to employment iii the Civil Service.
