ELDERLY MAN INJURED

KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR An elderly man, Frank AlcCarten, whose age is believed to be about 74 years, was seriously injured last evening at a result of being knocked down by a motor car, Mr. AlcCarten was crossing Gladstone road at the corner of Customhouse street when the acci-

{lent occurred, and it is stated that rain on the windscreen of the ear obscured the driver’s vision, so tliat ho failed to see Mr. McCarten when lie stepped right in front of the vehicle. Bystanders who witnessed the accident state that the ear was travelling extremely slowly, its speed being not more than seven miles an hour, and the driver was able to pull up within a yard or two of the accident.

Fortunately Superintendent, W. E. B. Froggatt, of the St., John Ambulance brigade, happened to be in the vicinity, and he was able to render valuable first aid until the arrival of Dr. Gunn, who reported that the injuries were serious, and ordered tho injured man’s removal to the Cook hospital. Mr. McCarten resides at Makaraka, but only recently was an inmate at the hospital, where he underwent an operation. He has no relatives in Gisborne, but has a brother residing in Auckland. Enquiries at the hospital to-day elicited the information that his condition is regarded as serious. "
