A POPULAR GENERAL
SIR GRANVILLE EYRIE.
SIDNEY, April 28.
There is no doubt about the popularity of General Sir Granville ltyrie, who has been appointed to succeed Sir Joseph Cook as High'Commissioner in London. At the Anzac Day ceremonies in Sydney, last Monday, the returned soldiers simply picked General Eyrie up and carried him shoulder high from the Domain. To an Imperial officer, it mignt have seemed very undignified, but General rtyrie thoroughly enjoyed it, and obviously realised that, despite the. decorations he holds, this was ready one of the highest honors ever conferred upon him. “Good old Bull!” cried the diggers. The police rushed to intervene, but they were simply brushed aside by tiie returned men, and besides General Ryrie himself shouted to them not to interfere, as he was enjoying it. It. was rather an uncomfortable trip for the High Commissioner elect, all the way from the Domain to the Australian Club, and having principally distinguished himself on the Palestine campaign, he would probably have been more comfortable even aboard a camel. Still, he stuck it out. At the club he was allowed to get down to terra firjna, but the diggers had not finished yet ; they demanded a speech, and refused to be satisfied until General Eyrie had mounted the balcony and addressed them in blunt, soldier-like fashion. Then thev sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” and went home.
